Why MajorMatch?

Hi! I am Kaartik, founder of MajorMatch. Throughout my research at NCERT and Cluster Innovation Centre, I was exposed to the fact that every year, millions of students worldwide face mental health and financial stress because they end up in college majors they were pushed into by peers, family, or short-term pressures. These mismatches can cause years of lost time, extra debt, and reduced well-being. MajorMatch is a non-profit project that uses data - including academic strengths, interests and the Big Five personality profile - to provide compassionate, data-backed suggestions that help students make informed choices about their undergraduate stream.

How data & Big Five help

Personality measures such as the Big Five (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) - when combined with students' expressed interests, hobbies, academic strengths and future goals - give a fuller picture of which undergraduate streams will likely fit a student's motivations and learning style. We treat these signals as contributing suggestions - not mandates - and present options with pros, cons and confidence scores.

How the AI & ML behind MajorMatch works

Behind the scenes, MajorMatch uses a combination of data preprocessing, personality trait mapping, and advanced machine learning models to generate tailored undergraduate stream recommendations.

Data preprocessing
We collect inputs such as Big Five personality scores, aptitudes (numerical, spatial, verbal, etc.), and goals. Data is standardized to ensure fair comparisons across different traits and skills.

Random Forest Classifier
A balanced Random Forest model is trained on past career and aptitude data to predict suitable majors. It evaluates patterns across hundreds of decision trees to minimize bias and improve reliability.

Confidence Scoring
Instead of giving one fixed answer, the model outputs probabilities for multiple majors. We present the top three matches with confidence percentages, helping students see options.

Personality Insight
Big Five traits (like Openness or Conscientiousness) are analyzed to highlight the student’s dominant strength and explain how it connects to different career paths.
Our approach ensures that recommendations are not mandates - they are evidence-backed suggestions combining personality, aptitude, and data-driven insights, always leaving the final decision to the student.
